DESIGN CONCEPT
For my design of “Night of the Iguana”, I wanted to turn our intimate thrust space into a very realistic and all encompassing environment. From the moment the audience enters the theatre I want them to automatically realize the environment they have just encountered. I would like to accomplish this in many ways. One of the elements I wanted to explore was taking the
greenery and foliage past the boundaries of the stage, making the theater itself an all encompassing environment. On stage I wanted to carry this same theme across. I have pushed my design far downstage; the entire design sits in front of the proscenium line. When working on this design I had two strong inspirations. As a scenic designer I am drawn to color, and
the vibrant and saturate colors commonly used in Latin American architecture really spoke to me. I have taken this inspirationinto the paint treatment of my design. Since I am attacking this design in the realm of realism, it was important for me to create an accurate and interesting natural environment. This was my second big source of inspiration for my design. The
agriculture of the region has amazing possibilities, and very interesting individual looks. These general ideas helped to lead me to my final design. In the blocking of the production, I have allowed for there to be entrances from the SL vaum entrance, and as well through the SR back door. These areas are both meant to represent the entrance to the jungle. On stage I have created numerous levels to work on, and as well a rake that crosses USR to USL. Because of the levels I have provided, I feel that there are many possibilities for blocking. The levels can be sat upon, and this helped me to eliminate the need for additional furniture. The natural mounds in the design are meant to be created with fiberglass, and they would be fully structural to use as acting areas. Off of the Middle level I have included the path to reach the Hammock. The hammock and tree placement in the design was chosen because it allowed for the most minimal sightline complications. The overall design has an element of abstraction and weathering. There are few right angles, included in the concept, and everything has been created to look as if it has been there for many years. I wanted to represent a hotel that was almost on its last leg.
